To know, hold onto and secure that which is sublime

Photo and video artist Marie-Jo Lafontaine was born in Belgium in 1950 and went on to study at the Ecole nationale suprieure de Architecture et des Arts visuels ‘La Chambre’. Today, She is one of the most prominent figures in European art. Her work has been included in many exhibitions in Belgium and abroad.

For her project in 1989, ‘Savoir retenir et fixer ce qui est sublime’ which means, ‘to know, hold onto and secure that which is sublime’, Marie-Jo Lafontaine asked women who felt their mixed-race origins were noticeable to have their portraits taken. The result is a strong collection of nineteen women standing above a symbolic red platform.

Lafontaine’s work is close in subject to the mixed project and has been a positive influence for the work.
